Rules for Daddy’s with Daughters

  1. Love her mom.  Let her know you love her mom.I went to New Hampshire
  2. Always be there.
  3. She will grow up looking for a hero. Let it be you.
  4. Savor every moment you have together.
  5. Pray for her.
  6. Buy her a glove and teach her to throw a baseball.
  7. She will fight with her mother.  Choose sides wisely.
  8. Be the kind of man you want her to find someday.
  9. Of course you look silly playing monster or bull.  Play anyway.
  10. Let her get dirty.
  11. There will come a day when she ask for a puppy (rabbit). Don’t over think it.  At least one time in her life, just say, “Yes.”image
  12. It’s never too early to start teaching her about money.
  13. Make pancakes in the shape of her age for breakfast on her birthday.
  14. Let her wear dresses to play.  What are you saving them for?
  15. Dance with her.
  16. Take her fishing.
  17. Learn to say NO.
  18. Tell her she is beautiful but also tell her she is smart and brave and strong.
  19. Teach her to change a flat.
  20. Take her camping.
  21. Let her hold the wheel and ‘drive’.
  22. She’s as smart as any boy.  Make sure she knows that.
  23. When she learns to give kisses she will want to plant them all over your face.  Encourage this practice.
  24. Knowing how to eat sunflower seeds correctly will not get her into a good college.  Teach her anyway.
  25. Let her ride on your shoulders.  It is pure magic.
  26. If is in her nature to make music.  Listen.  She will make art.  Look.  She will tell stories and sing songs.  Pay attention.
  27. Take her to the park.  Often.
  28. She will eagerly await your return home in the evenings.  Don’t be late.  Be as excited to see her as she is to see you.
  29. Believe in her.  Teach her to believe in herself.
  30. Never miss her birthday.  Let it be her day.
  31. Teach her about football.
  32. Let her roll around on the grass.
  33. Take her swimsuit shopping.  Or shopping for her prom dress.  Don’t be afraid to say no to some but be willing to say yes to some.
  34. Somewhere between her 3rd and 6th birthday the odds are that she will ask you to marry her.  Let her down gently.
  35. She will probably want to crawl in your bed after a nightmare.  Let her.
  36. Few things in life are as comforting to a crying little girl then her daddy’s hand.  Never forget this.  Never think that she is too old to come crying to you.
  37. Introduce her to swings.  She’ll squeal to go higher and faster.  Her definition of higher and faster is probably not the same as yours.  Keep that in mind.
  38. When she is older her definition of higher and faster will the same as yours.  When that happens go ahead and give it all you’ve got.
  39. Holding her upside down by the legs while she giggles and screams uncontrollably is good for your biceps.
  40. She might ask you to buy her a pony.  Don’t. But it is okay to rent one.
  41. Take it easy on the presents for her birthday and Christmas.  Instead give the gift of life experiences.  Share them with her.  Talk about them often.
  42. Let her know she can always come home but make her independent enough that she doesn’t want to.
  43. Encourage her to be bold.
  44. One day she will want to wear pink cowboy boots, shorts and a turquoise sweater to school. Let her. Little diva
  45. Write her a handwritten letter every year for her birthday.  Save them.  Give them to her someday.
  46. Learn to trust her.
  47. When in doubt, trust your heart.
  48. When your teenage daughter is upset, learning when to engage and when to back off will add YEARS to your life.
  49. Ice cream can solve everything.  Know her favorite flavor.  Sometimes it is okay to eat ice cream before dinner. Or for dinner.
  50. The dating day is coming.  There is nothing you can do to be ready for it.  The sooner you accept this, the easier it will be.  Take her on dates when she is young.  Hold the door, pull out her chair, take her arm and treat her with respect.  That way she’ll hold all her dates to the same high standards.
  51. Slow down on a walk and let her take your hand.
  52. Laugh with her.
  53. Let her pick out your clothes one day.
  54. Teach her to have her own voice, her own opinion.
  55. Let her know it is okay to be like her mom.
  56. Stay up until she gets home.  Let her know you are staying up until she gets home.
  57. Let her know you will always come get her.  Always.
  58. Hold her as often as you can for as long as you can.
  59. The song “I Loved her First” will make you cry.  Listen to it alone.  Someday listen to it with her.
  60. Sing her to sleep.  You’ll never be as content as you are rocking her with her head on your chest while you sing, “Dah.Dah.Dah” unless it is when she chimes in “Uh-huh”.
  61. Make her say ‘yes and no sir’, ‘yes and no ma’am’, please and thank you.  Good manners are important.
  62. Be her Daddy first and her friend second.
  63. Today she is learning to walk, tomorrow she will be walking down the driveway to get on the school bus.  The next day will be college and the day after that the aisle.  Don’t blink.

  1. My dad has written a few words at my request. I plan to have them tattoo’d on my shoulder. Why the words, in his handwriting – because it is part of my core being that I know comes from him. Why my shoulder (along the top boney part)? Because still, with me at 39 and him at 81 there is no safer place in this world than so close to him I can put my head on his shoulder.
